Jane Chapman has created something truly beautiful in her new picture book, Together. The book is one of very few words but they have been delicately selected to deliver a power and moving message of togetherness, compassion and connection.
The book starts against the backdrop of a shady and fog consumed rainforest and we are introduced to, whilst hidden behind a leaf, a young infant gorilla. Hidden under shady leaves, a tiny face peeps out. Silent. Alone. The opening page is minimal but powerful in its delivery. Instantly you realise that this gorilla isn't alone by choice. Questions begin to flood your mind - What has happened to this infant? Where are his parents? Why is he hiding? There are so many opportunities for deeper level questioning throughout this book that I have no doubt that this text could used effectively as a class guided reading text.
This is also a text that requires a few reads to fully appreciate. On first reading, I didn't connect with the hidden message of compassion for someone who has experienced loss or trauma. But once this message hit home, I experienced the book in a different way and connected on a whole new level.
One reason why this text is so powerful is the illustrations. It is rare to find a text that is illustrated as beautifully as this one. I found myself becoming lost in each page and would again find countless opportunities to use this in school....removing the text from each page would open up so many areas of discussion with children. This really is one of the most beautiful books I have read recently.
