Aunt Severe and the Dragons
Nick Garlick

Andersen Press Ltd

ISBN 9781849390552

There is a shortage of stand-alone, quality stories for early KS2 readers so it's always good to see a new one emerge. This one has a clever plot focused around a boy who is sent to live with his grey and severe aunt but whose life is brightened when four lost dragons cross his path. The satisfying plot sees the baddies dealt with, the dragons safely returned home and what was lost, found.

Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis Complex
Eoin Colfer

Penguin Books Ltd

ISBN 9780141328027

If you haven't yet discovered Artemis Fowl (and I have heard plenty of adult readers rave about the books) then do use this as your excuse to begin reading them (there are now seven books to enjoy). After dabbling in too much fairy magic, young criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl has become nice and he's no good to anyone, including the faeries. This book has a darker psychological angle than the earlier stories but is also just as funny and perfectly plotted as ever.

I really enjoyed this book the first time around and am pleased to see Puffin bring it back as a modern classic. It's a delicious story about two boys who discover an abandoned alien spacecraft, and it's perfect for boy readers aged nine plus (or confident younger readers). Girls will also enjoy it, though. It has plenty of humour, a great plot and alien gadgetry - what more could you want!

Knowing how Beast Quest has got boys reading, it's good to see that there is now a follow-up series available to them, The Chronicles of Avantia. The first title was published in July, the next in October. It is aimed at readers aged nine plus, but like Beast Quest, the text is simple and the books are quite slim - this one 192 pages. A 9 year old Beast Quest fan (whose first language is Polish) raced through it and demanded more!
