About Author

Pete Johnson used to work as a film critic for Radio One as well as for his local paper. As a critic and member of the National Film Theatre he has interviewed a number of visiting stars such as Nicholas Cage, Melanie Griffith, James Stewart and Ingrid Bergman.

Although no longer a critic, he remains a huge fan of the cinema and is an authority on classic American and British films. Before writing full-time Pete was also a teacher in a mixed secondary school in Hertfordshire teaching English, Creative Writing and Drama.

Pete Johnson has written many novels for teenagers including We the Haunted, The Dead Hour, The Cool Boffin, Ten Hours to Live and The Vision, all published by Egmont. The Ghost Dog (Random House, 1996), a story about the power of the imagination, was his first books for the 8-13 year old age range. In 1997 it won the Stockton Children's book of the Year Award and the Young Telegraph/Fully Booked Award, immediately establishing him as a writer of talent for children of this age.

Since then, Pete Johnson has written a number of successful books for 8-13 year olds including My Friend's a Werewolf, The Phantom Thief, Eyes of the Alien, The Creeper and The Frighteners.

Using his trademark sharp, witty dialogue, Pete Johnson uses comedy to explore the difficult situation of parents splitting up and its effect on the children in the family. How to Train Your Parents, published in 2003, and Avenger, published in January 2004, were both well-received. Avenger won the Sheffield Children's Book Award in the Shorter Novels Category 2005.

Trust Me I'm A Troublemaker (Random House) won the Calderdale Children's Book of the Year 2006 in the Upper Primary Category. Help, I'm a Classroom Gambler!, won the 2007 Leicester Best Book Award and the 2007 Sheffield Children's Book Award.

The Bad Spy's Guide was Shortlisted for the 2007 Blue Peter Book Award - Book I Couldn't Put Down category. How To Get Famous in 2008 was shortlisted for the 2009 Leicester Best Book Award, the 2009 Coventry Inspiration Book Awards and the 2009 Sheffield Children's Book Award.

Pete's new book, The TV Time Travellers, published by Random House, is a fun, contemporary take on reality television with a WW2 theme.

Pete Johnson was born in Winchester, Hampshire, and now lives in St Albans, Hertfordshire.
