Great School Libraries Campaign update

Phase 2 of the Great School Libraries (GSL) campaign is now underway, following the survey of school libraries that formed the first phase said Caroline Roche, chair of the GSL committee.

In a blog for the campaign, Roche stated that the campaign is looking to deepen its political involvement further. The committee will be lobbying the government to adopt the national strategy for school libraries in Scotland, Vibrant Libraries, Thriving Schools - A National Strategy for School Libraries in Scotland 2018-2023, across the UK.

While the document hasn't yet been fully implemented by all local authorities and schools in Scotland, "having a document setting out standards for school libraries for the whole of the UK was an excellent first step".

The organisation has also decided to endorse the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions' (IFLA') School Libraries Guidelines manifesto of school libraries, which states, 'The school library provides information and ideas that are fundamental to functioning successfully in today's information and knowledge-based society. The school library equips students with life-long learning skills and develops the imagination, enabling them to live as responsible citizens.' The aim will to bring British school libraries into line with international ones.
