A boy and his cat, Ginger, have a bedtime secret: when baddies are out the boy becomes Midnight Ninja! Go, midnight ninja, go! An action-packed picture book written and illustrated by Sam Lloyd that is told in an engaging, comic-book style. It kept my five-year-old entertained throughout and inspired him to immediately don a ninja style head scarf and fight 'bad guys'. The boy discovers that socks have been going missing from clothes lines everywhere. Who could need so many socks? Lots of gadgets to choose from and then off Midnight Ninja goes, backflipping into action, in search of the culprit. The Spider King has stolen the socks for his children and so, the Midnight Ninja battles the Spider King but gets caught in a sticky trap. Never fear Ginger, the cat, is here to save the day! Ginger lifts his neck scarf and puts it around his forehead then rides in on the ninja-cycle to do battle with the Spider King. All ends well though - the baby spiders even get some new socks out of the silky webs! I love the comic book look of the story and I think Sam Lloyd has done a great job here. I would recommend for children from four years onwards. Picture book / Ages 4+ / Reviewed by James Hewish, teacher
