This is a charming historical adventure, set in 1882, follows the fate of Maharajah, an elephant who is sold at auction, and a street boy (think one of Fagin's boys from Oliver Twist). Maharajah is bought by an owner of a zoo, and before they have left Edinburgh a bet has been placed between two competing zoo owners, to see how quickly they can arrive at their final destination. The boy ends up involved in the elephant race, and soon skulduggery and mischief seem to be following Maharajah and their party. There is an element of mystery as the boy, and reader, try to work out who or what is causing the mischief that befalls the party, which adds depth. The story moves along at a good pace, and there are lots of different elements which could be picked up (poverty, social class, animal welfare and ethics, position of women etc) which could make it a good class reader. The characters are for the most part well written, and interact convincingly, although some of the background characters come across as slightly larger than life on occasion. The fact that it is based on a true story will add an extra dimension for many readers, and may make it enticing to those who prefer non-fiction. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and details of it have stayed with me. I think it would be great for a children aged 9-14. A lovely story with great depth and details. 416 pages / Ages 9-14 years / Reviewed by Alison Tarrant, school librarian.
