Any preschool or EYFS setting with a buildings or construction themed topic should certainly use Dino Diggers as part of it. The story is simple to follow and uses a typical story journey where there is a problem to be resolved. This allows it to be easily innovated by children and I could see how a class would enjoy creating a different problem to be solved on the builder's yard. Whenever I read a book about dinosaurs, my first concern is if I will be able to pronounce the dinosaur names. Thankfully, Dino Diggers cleverly uses the scientific names as part of the character names e.g. Terri Dactyl. Rose Impey has also written a story where the social skill of team work can be explored and discussed as the dinosaurs come together to solve the problem. The book doesn't shy away from using specific language when talking about the tools and equipment the dino team are using, this is one of the reasons why it would be such a great book for a topic around builders. I could see using this book in connection with a building year small world activity. It could even be easily replicated by using dinosaur toys as well. This is the first in a new series of books and would be a great read for any children who are fans of dinosaurs and diggers - it even comes with a free slot together digger and dinosaur! Meet the Dino Diggers - The best in town! This is a fun picture book about a group of dinosaur builders who are building a car factory for Mr Ali O'Saurus when disaster strikes! This book has a simple storyline that introduces children to the various roles and jobs on a building site; laying foundations, following plans, moving earth and laying pipes. There is a lot of subject-specific vocabulary in this that would be a great way to further children's understanding of building, or for a child who loves diggers to learn more about building sites. The story comes with a card model of a digger to put together, a great chance to sit with a child and talk to them about the story and spend quality time together. As a teacher, I'd use this book as a great way of getting building-interested children into a dinosaur topic, or as a way to start a conversation about teamwork. It's also a great story to use for topics on buildings and the local area - or just as a fun story to share! Picture book / Ages 3+ / Reviewed by Lizi Coombs, teacher.
