Cat Weatherill

About Author

Cat was born and raised in Liverpool, where her grandmother saw an angel, her uncle fell off the Liver Building and her grandfather donated his shirt buttons to Beatles' fans. Now she lives in Wales, a land of mist and magic, which provides much of the inspiration for the dramatic scenery in her writing.

Cat Weatherill is both a children's author and a professional performance storyteller, appearing internationally at storytelling and literature festivals, on national radio and television, and at schools throughout the country. She started writing when she was seven stories, poems, film reviews, endless diaries and competition entries.

BARKBELLY was Cat's first book. It is an original, magical story. A shiny egg falls down from the sky, a wooden egg, no larger that a goose egg, but much heavier. Out of this egg our hero, Barkbelly, is born. He is a wooden boy adopted by human parents. When a terrible accident happens in his home village, Barkbelly is blamed and runs for his life. On his dangerous journey he discovers things about his past. The story relates his amazing adventures as he travels far and wide in search of his real parents.

Cat says: "The most important influence on my work is the landscape. I write what I see. This is why Barkbelly is full of woods and mountains, villages and farms.

"Most of my inspiration comes from traditional folktales. Barkbelly was inspired by the famous Bohemian tale The Wooden Baby, and the book contains several familiar folk tale motifs the woodcutter and his wife who can't have a baby, the hero who helps an animal and is helped in return, etc."

Cat's second novel, Snowbone, was published in April 2006.
