Robert Winston

About Author

TV presenter Lord Robert Winston belongs to that rare breed of scientists who combine academic brilliance with charisma and a flair for communication. His TV appearances have made him a household name, and he recently beat Delia Smith in
a 'power list' poll of celebrities.

His BBC TV series include Making Babies, The Secret Life of Twins, Superhuman, Your Life in Their Hands, Human Instinct, and The Human Body, which won three BAFTAs. His enthusiasm for communicating science has seen him riding rollercoasters, standing naked in igloos, drinking himself into a stupor, and putting his own sperm under the microscope.

Lord Winston first caught the public imagination for his work on fertility at London's Hammersmith Hospital, where his pioneering work with test-tube babies helped bring dozens of 'miracle babies' to childless couples. His research into embryology and genetics have earned him international acclaim, and his numerous books on genetics and medicine, many written for lay readers, won him the Royal Society's prestigious Michael Faraday Gold Award. He was made a labour life peer in 1995 and is currently Director of Reproductive Medicine at Hammersmith Hospital and Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College London.
