If you're a fan of The Hunger Games and would enjoy exploring the darker side of fame on social media, Island of Influencers is the perfect book for you! This YA novel merges reality TV, with the pressures of internet fame.
Island of Influencers follows Harper, a wannabe influencer who unexpectedly becomes the centre of attention when a live stream of hers goes viral. In her attempt to uncover the truth behind the 'kidnapping' of her cousin Belle, she uncovers a reality show that promises fame and fortune to the one who can survive its challenges. Along with other influencers, Harper is thrust into a show designed to push them to their limits.
I enjoyed the author's sharp commentary which explores the lengths people will go to for likes, followers and online recognition. Island of Influencers is full of drama, humour and on point observations. This novel is perfect for fans of the Hunger Games or those that enjoyed watching I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!
There are demeaning tasks and the constants face the pressure of being watched 24/7, being judged and subsequently trolled online. While the first few chapters took a bit of time to fully draw me in, the pace picked up significantly once Harper entered the reality show. I found the concept of influencers competing against each other to be quite an interesting one as it explored the internet popularity culture. How far do you go for likes and followers? How do you stay current? What are the influencers known for? Do they have a talent themselves or are they gossiping or commenting on others and profiting off of their backs?
Harper's journey forces her to confront what she values and whether fame is worth the price. A timely reflection on how social media distorts self-worth and encourages toxic behaviour. I loved it, it's an exciting and thought-provoking read.
