The Story of Inventions by Catherine Barr and Steve Williams, illustrated by Amy Husband, covers some of the most famous and used inventions throughout history. This highly visual book is organised chronologically from the invention of the wheel to the invention of the internet. Each invention is treated to a highly illustrated double page spread which covers the reasons behind the invention and any adaptations that we have made in modern life. Interesting facts and anecdotes are spread throughout. Amy Husband's illustrations bring the inventions to life and are interesting to engage with. Her style shows the changes made over time and help enhance the text further. This book would suit children in Year 1 and 2 who are beginning to explore information texts such as these. The informal style makes the text more accessible and the book is suitable for reading for pleasure as well as a research or classroom based project. Some more advanced readers may want more detail and depth, however, this would make an excellent starting point. 40 pages / Ages 5-8 years / Reviewed by Bryony Davies, school librarian
