If you're planning to run the 500 Words competition as part of your World Book Day activities, then you might want to use this Live Lesson from the BBC with hints and writing tips to help get children started.

The 500 Words short story competition from the BBC is open to children aged 5-13 years. The competition will close at 7pm on Friday 8th March. There are plenty of writing tips from authors and ideas for getting started on the 500 Words website, below, including a Live Lesson by teachers Julia Skinner and Simon Hunt and award-winning author Christopher Edge. The 500 Words Final will be broadcast live from Hampton Court Palace on BBC Radio 2's Chris Evans Breakfast Show, on Friday 8th June. Parents, guardians and teachers can register for a Submitter Account via the link, below. Once an account has been created, it can be used to upload a single story or a whole school's worth of tales. Prizes for the six winners include attending a spectacular 500 Words Final from Windsor Castle, where superstar celebrities will read the winning stories live on the radio. This year each of the winning stories will also be illustrated by a well-known illustrator: Helen Oxenbury, Tony Ross, Susan Varley, Jarvis, David Roberts, and Briony May Smith will each illustrate one of the winning stories. The winners in each age category will also receive: Gold Winners - Chris Evans' height in books, 500 books for their school and an invitation to visit the set of a CBBC Production. Silver Winners - HRH The Duchess of Cornwall's height in books. Bronze Winners - Their own height in books. Find out more here:
