Carnegie and Kate Greenaway medal nominations

The nominations have been announced for the CILIP Carnegie Medal and CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal. For the first time this year, the children and students shadowing the awards will help to choose a children's choice prize for each medal, which will be awarded alongside the winners of the Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals.

The Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals are the country's oldest children's book awards, recognising outstanding writing and illustration in books for children and young people. All the titles nominated for each medal can be seen via the link, below. This year, 254 books have been nominated for the 2019 Medals; 137 books are in the running for the CILIP Carnegie Medal and 117 for the Kate Greenaway Medal. While the list is dominated by books aimed at teenagers, there is a strong selection of books for children aged up to 11 years both on the Carnegie list and the Kate Greenaway shortlist. Several authors and illustrators have been nominated twice for a Carnegie or Kate Greenaway medal, including Sita Brahmachari, Emma Carroll, Juno Dawson and Steve Antony. External bodies have for the first time helped to nominate titles, including Commonword, IBBY, Inclusive Minds and RNIB as part of CILIP's diversity and inclusion action plan for the Awards. Other changes to this year's awards include an equality, diversity and inclusion advisory panel to support and advise on the Awards process, as well as the new prize voted for by children and young people. Each nominated book will now be read by every member of the judging panel, comprising 14 children's and youth librarians representing all regions of CILIP's Youth Libraries Group. From these nominations the judging panel will decide the longlist, which will be announced on 18 February 2019. They will also select the shortlists, which will be announced on 18 March. The 2019 Medal winners will be announced on 17 June 2019. The awards will be shadowed by thousands of children and young people in schools and libraries in the UK and overseas through reading groups that 'shadow' the judges as they read the shortlists. Shadowers critically and creatively explore the shortlisted books, through group participation and online engagement: posting reviews, blogs, artworks, videos, exploring human rights and participating in visual literacy based creative activities.
