Carnegie & Greenaway nominations announced

Nominations have been published for the 2021 CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals, with 152 books nominated for the 2021 Medals.

The CILIP Carnegie Medal is awarded to a book written in English for children and young people that creates an outstanding reading experience through writing.

A number of debut authors are among the nominations including Danielle Jawando for And the Stars Were Burning Brightly (Simon and Schuster), Kalynn Bayron's Cinderella is Dead (Bloomsbury), Sue Cheung's Chinglish (Andersen Press) and Nizrana Farook's The Girl Who Stole an Elephant (Nosy Crow) - reflecting the range and diversity of the current crop of new voices in children's publishing.

Established authors nominated this year include Hilary McKay for The Time of Green Magic (Macmillan), Patrice Lawrence's Eight Pieces of Silva (Hodder Children's Books), Tom Palmer's After the War (Barrington Stoke), Elizabeth Wein's The Enigma Game (Bloomsbury), and Holly Bourne's The Places I've Cried in Public.

The CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal recognises a book that creates an outstanding reading experience through illustration.

This year four titles have received nominations in both Medal categories.

Each nominated book will now be read by every member of the 2021 judging panel - which this year includes 14 children's and youth librarians from CILIP's Youth Libraries Group - who volunteer their time as judges.

From these nominations, the judging panel will decide the long and shortlists and finally, the 2021 Medal winners, based on the official Medals criteria.

The Shadowers' Choice Award will also run in 2021, voted for by children and young people who take part in the Awards shadowing scheme - a reading for pleasure initiative that engages thousands of children and young people in schools and libraries in the UK and overseas through 'shadowing' reading groups.

These groups will vote for their favourite books to receive the Shadowers' Choice Award at the winners' ceremony in June 2021.

The Longlist for each medal will be announced on 18 February 2021, with Shortlists announced on 18 March, which is when the Shadowing will begin.

The 2020 Medal winners' and Shadowers' Choice winner will be announced on 16 June 2021.
