Author Karen McCombie joined ReadingZone Live to talk about historical fiction and her latest novel, Little Bird Flies, and answered students' questions about writing books set in the past.

During the event, which was hosted by Cheam Common Junior School, Karen talked about her writing and what inspired her to write Little Bird Flies (see link, below). Little Bird Flies is set in 1861, on the tiny and remote Scottish island of Torrnish, where Bridie lives. While she loves the island, Bridie also dreams of escaping her narrow world - maybe to America and the New World. When a new Laird arrives on the island and is cruelly oppressive to his tenants, including Bridie's family, the escape that she longed for takes on a new urgency. Students asked Karen a range of questions about her writing, research and tips on how to approach stories set in the past, and she also read from Little Bird Flies.
