National Non-Fiction November, 2023

National Non-Fiction November ( #NNFN2022 ), organised by the Federation of Children's Book Groups,  is an annual celebration of the power of non-fiction to inspire children and celebrate readers who have a passion for information and facts.

The theme for National Non-Fiction November 2022 is Communication, celebrating the breadth, depth, and richness of non-fiction writing, illustrating, and publishing for children and young people. During the month, schools, libraries and local FCBG groups can get involved by organising and taking part in activities, entering the competition, and making use of the of the available resources.

Key activities taking place during the month are:

Everyone Loves a Quiz - the Britannica Magazine Schools Championship 2022
To celebrate National Non-Fiction November, FCBG are teaming up with Britannica Magazines for the Britannica Magazine Schools Quiz Championship 2022! Schools can enter a team of 4 from KS2 & KS3. Visit www.britannicamagazine.co.uk/schools for more information and to register. Schools should register for the Britannica Magazine Schools Club (which is free) and details of how schools can enter the contest will be sent by email. Online heats will be held on the 9th November. The live final will be held at St Bride in London on 30th November. The school which is the overall champion will win more than £1000 worth of non-fiction books for the school library.

Write and Illustrate 'an Interview with' Competition
We are running a fantastic competition for 5-12s with the support of Welbeck Children's Books and inspired by author Andy Seed's brilliantly funny 'Interview with' series.  Have you ever wondered what it might be like to talk to an animal you are fascinated by or chat with a famous person from the past? Children can choose either an animal or historical character and create an illustrated interview with them in a Q & A format. More information here.  Prizes include signed books for the three age groups plus an author visit from Andy Seed to the overall winners school.

Activities, ideas and places to visit
In addition to the NNFN Competition, we have produced a list of suggested activities, ideas and places to visit, which is intended to provide a starting point and inspiration for book groups, schools and libraries planning to celebrate NNFN this year.

Booklists and Supporting Resources
There is an exciting range of books on our booklist for schools, libraries and families which is available to download from the website

Tricia Adams FCBG Chair said, "Communication is vital in all interactions - whether between humans' face to face, electronically, or between other species and humans. National Non-Fiction November gives us an opportunity to look at some of the ways communication works, as well as promoting information books. The reading of NF/information books for pleasure is just as important as reading the classics - and often appeals to children who may not want to tackle a novel, or children who like a range of texts to explore."
