Creative writing is being celebrated today with National Writing Day, which is being coordinated by First Story and some 35 partners. It aims to encourage all forms of creative writing.

The campaign aims to help children discover that creative writing can be fun and can also boost their attainment, confidence, aspiration and imagination. Today, writers are being encouraged to snap the picture from their window and to write about it and share their work via the website, below. Michael Rosen will also be talking about the power of writing at the British Library. Research from the National Literacy Trust indicates that children who write creatively outside school are seven times more likely to write above the expected level for their age compared with children who don't enjoy writing (23.2% versus 3.2%) But half of pupils (49.3%) don't enjoy writing outside school with the main barriers to writing including not being able to decide what to write and struggling with spelling and grammar, with around one third of all children finding this difficult. The National Writing Day website, below, includes resources to help encourage children and local communities to write creatively.
