Can I Join Your Club by John Kelly, Steph Laberis Reviewed by Marie Berry, Teacher Many children at one time or another have a problem fitting in. For whatever reason, whether it be making friends, not following the current trends etc, children have challenges with groupings and friendships at lots of different points. Can I Join Your Club? is a lovely story for tackling the issues surrounding accepting yourself for who you are and being happy in your own body. The story focus on Duck, who wants to join a club, but every time he tries he isn't lion, snake or elephant enough to get through the application process and each time, his application is denied. After being left feeling dejected he decides to open his own club. And he accepts everyone. As Duck accepts all sorts of members who are all very different, it is soon very apparent which is the best and most popular club to be in. And even the exclusive Lion, Snake and Elephant quickly decide that it will be much more fun to be part of a club everyone wants to join. I think a message of acceptance and diversity is portrayed really well here and this book would work on many levels to discuss all sorts of issues. I would particularly recommend this book as a PSHE resource looking at friendships and treating people fairly. How lonely people can get when they are left out. Being resilient and bouncing back from disappointment. This book would also be a good way of approaching current news topics such a accepting those from different countries and cultures. How our differences should be celebrated and accepted and that you shouldn't have to follow a certain way to be part of a society. I enjoyed this book and will be adding it to our library to be enjoyed as a great picture book and used as a super teaching resource. Ages 5+ We Are Family by Patricia Hegarty, Ryan Wheatcroft Reviewed by Marie Berry, Teacher. We are family is an excellent and beautifully presented resource to use with children. In its first instance it is a simple poetry book that tells us all about families and how they help and the challenges there can be. But it's the use of the illustrations that are very powerful. So often in bookstores etc... one family dynamic is shown but in this book there are many different ones and all on one page - 2.4 children, mixed race, single parent, same sex, disability, and more. It is these illustrations that enable this book to be used so well as a resource in schools with children. I teach in a school where there is every family dynamic you can think of, and we recently took part in a Mother's Day project. This can be a sensitive issue for children where the 'usual' mum figure isn't there. So we used this book as our way in to looking at Mother's Day as a time to celebrate and say thank you to all those who look after us, mums, mans, aunts, grannies, dads etc... The book created lots of talking points across the school and children were engaged talking about their different families. As a school we celebrate these difference and this book wonderfully shows these as what families can and should look like. I've given this book to our learning mentor team to use in the furture - it will be so useful when working on emotional issues linked to families. Ages 5+ Under the Same Sky by Britta Teckentrup Reviewed by Emma Castle Britta Teckentrup's beautiful painterly imagery, clever peep-throughs and simple rhyming text make this picture book a real treat to share with younger children. It's also a wonderful reminder about the oneness of our Earth - wherever we come from, we all live 'Under the Same Sky'; we sing the same songs, play the same games, and feel the same love. Teckentrup takes us across a variety of landscapes - frozen ice, mountains, the sea and forests where each of the animals lives with their young. The peep-throughs are integral to the flow of the text and the images, and really add another layer to this story, until we reach the final spreads where we turn the page to see the moon shining down across all theses creatures. A lovely story that can be used to introduce children to the idea that, somewhere else in the world, are children just like them and that, while we are all different, we have many similarities.
