Homelessness, identity and addiction are explored in Sarah Carroll's debut YA novel, The Girl In Between, for readers aged 12+ (see interview, below), and we have a set of ten copies to give to a school book group.
The Girl In Between is set in an old, abandoned mill where a girl and her ma take shelter from living on the streets. To the girl it's home, her safe place, the Castle. But as her mother's addictions spins out of control and the 'Authorities' that terrify her move ever closer, the girl realises she is trapped - stuck in the crumbling mill with only the ghosts of the past for company. Can she move on before it's too late? Talking about the homelessness she explores in The Girl In Between, Carroll says, "For most of us, home is a given. So what is it like to be a young girl growing up without a physical place to provide the safety, comfort and belonging we all need? What would you do to replace or recreate it? And when you found something that you could call home, as the girl does with the Castle, what lengths would you go to stop it from being torn away? "From the first words that I wrote, 'I'm invisible', I wanted to know that girl who could call an abandoned mill home, so that I could learn what it was like to be invisible but still matter." If you would like your school book group to be entered into the free draw for a set of The Girl In Between, email your details to: [email protected] OR send us a Comment, below. The winner will be informed in early June. We would love to have a review or two from your students once they have had a chance to read the book.
