Deborah Ellis

About Author

Deborah Ellis grew in Paris, Ontario, Canada. Like many writers through history she was a creative loner as a child, at odds with formal education in her youth, and a voracious reader at all times. As an adult Deborah has been occupied with many issues of interest to women, such as peace, education, and equality in society at home and abroad.

She works as a mental health residential counsellor at a group home for women in Toronto, Canada, reading and writing in her spare time. She is the winner of the Governor General's Award in Canada (equivalent to the Carnegie Medal) for her first novel Looking for X. She is also the acclaimed author of the Breadwinner Trilogy: The Breadwinner, Parvana's Journey, and
Mud City.

Deborah travels whenever she can. She has spent a lot of time in Pakistan, in Afghan refugee camps, talking to women and documenting their lives under 20 years of war. The Heaven Shop is the result of visiting Malawi and Zambia, seeing the African AIDS crisis at first hand, and talking to little girls like Binti and their parents.
