Picture Book of the Month, January 2025
Author and illustrator Jana Curll introduces her picture book, My Path (Nosy Crow), which celebrates the unique journeys and positive choices that children can make each day of their lives.
The story follows a snail through its day; sometimes the Snail's path is straightforward but sometimes there are obstacles to get through and decisions to make. Each choice helps the Snail to grow and to know that there will always be help along the way.
Jana Curll tells us more about My Path, and reads from the first few pages:
Q&A with Jana Curll
"Drawn from my personal reflections, this tale offers a gentle reminder of the power of resilience and the value of
embracing one's distinct path in life.
1. Can you tell us a little about yourself, and the kinds of books you enjoy creating?
Hello! I'm Jana (pronounced Jay-nah) Curll, a full-time illustrator and part-time graphic designer who was born and lives on the West Coast of Canada. I studied graphic design and illustration at the IDEA program in North Vancouver, and after graduating, worked at Vancouver Science World, and as an art director creating children's activities.
Since 2019 I've been concentrating on illustrating children's books that explore my own curiosity about where I live: by the sea, mountains and rainforests. I work in my small office in my home, and often have a large cat on my lap keeping me company.
2. What is your new book, My Path, about?
My Path tells the story of a joyful, resolute snail who sets off on an adventure to carve out their own route, undeterred by hurdles and difficulties. As the snail progresses, they pause to reflect on the journey, gaining meaningful insights and wisdom. Drawn from my personal reflections, this tale offers a gentle reminder of the power of resilience and the value of embracing one's distinct path in life.
3. Can you tell us about the ideas you explore around the choices we make in the story, and what inspired you to write it?
In my own journey as an artist, parent (and human!), I've come to recognize the significance of staying present, making mindful choices in the moment, and moving forward despite challenges, whether real or imagined.
The snail character provided a perfect lens for me to explore this. They are slow, deliberate, and constantly attuned to their surroundings, without always being aware of the larger environment. Much like the snail in the story, we all encounter moments where we need a balance of action, rest and reflection and always gentle reminders to keep going.
4. Was the main character always going to be a snail? Why did you choose it?
The little Snail was actually pitched as a Slug! There were some interesting explorations about their vulnerabilities, but the shell of the Snail also allowed for some extra characterization so we changed it. When threatened or overwhelmed, the Snail was able to disappear inside its shell - again, something we, as people do - retreating into our 'safe place'. It was important to show that that is healthy and natural to stop and rest before carrying on. The visual representation of the Snail slime is also an important element of the book, to show how far the Snail has come.
5. What kinds of discussions would you like the book to inspire?
I hope this book sparks conversations about the importance of trusting and respecting ourselves, while also honouring the unique paths of others without judgment. What does it truly mean to follow our own journey? How do the choices of those around us shape our course? And how do we navigate moments of doubt and uncertainty? These are timeless questions we all grapple with, no matter our stage in life.
6. How important is it to be able to explore these ideas with young children?
Exploring these ideas with young children is essential because it can help them develop a strong sense of self, and empower them to make decisions confidently. It is also important to honour and empathise with the unique journeys of others. Addressing uncertainty encourages kids to face challenges constructively.
7. Can you suggest any other activities that My Path could inspire, at home and in the classroom?
I am currently working on a Companion Guide for My Path which should be out early this year! It contains activities and crafts centred around the themes of the book.
8. What was the process of illustrating this story? How do you make a snail - your main character - look so appealing?
My writing and illustration process often unfold together, and I find it easier to write once I can already see what is happening. Doodling is essential! Living on a wet, rainy coast, I'm surrounded by all sorts of fascinating, slimy creatures, so drawing this little snail felt pretty natural.
During the writing process the snail explored lots of different environments. My editors and art directors were able to swoop in a played a crucial role in refining the character and its journey, helping me to find essence and balance. They had their work cut out for them!
9. What other books have you written that explore ideas and concepts that readers of My Path might also enjoy?
Mountain and Cloud explores a special friendship, enhanced by the characters looking inside themselves for personal growth in order to strengthen their relationship. Like My Path, I crafted characters directly inspired by my environment (Mountain and Cloud), and tried to give them ageless emotions and journeys.
Barnacle Bay, set for release in 2025, is a graphic novel for young readers centred on themes of belonging and community. Once again, my inspiration comes from the shoreline nearby, and I've created quirky characters based on the often-overlooked creatures around us, each with personalities that readers can easily connect with. This book is part of a planned series that celebrates the small, yet vital, ecosystems of Earth's tiny, often unnoticed inhabitants, highlighting their importance and charm.
10. What kinds of things do you enjoy doing to relax - and what kinds paths do you like to create?
I enjoy hanging out with my family and friends, and volunteer in at school events, and as a leader with Girl Guides of Canada. I also enjoy wandering the neighbourhood since I live by the beach and forest, which is where I draw most of my inspiration from.
