About Author

As the daughter of a foreign correspondent, Sandi Toksvig grew up in Europe, Africa and America.

After schooling in America and a first-class degree from Cambridge, Sandi went into the theatre where she both wrote and performed before becoming one of the founder members of the Comedy Store Players.

Sandi is well known for her television and radio work, as a comedienne, presenter, writer and actor. She currently presents the popular travel show Excess Baggage on Radio 4 and hosts the Radio 4 News Quiz, she also writes several newspaper and magazine columns.

As an author, Sandi has written several adult titles as well as five books for children, and spends time promoting her books at various festivals as well as presenting at awards ceremonies.

Sandis family was involved in the Danes efforts against the occupying forces during the Second World War. In her childrens novel, Hitlers Canary, she shares with us the fascinating story that her own father told her of how the heroic efforts of the Danes saved thousands of Jews from almost certain death. Hidden in houses across the country the Jews were able to make their way to the coast and flee Denmark for the safety of Sweden.

The title Hitlers Canary is taken from the nickname we gave Denmark - it couldnt have been further from the truth - Denmark was a fiercely independent nation and never sang along to Hitlers tune. Hitlers Canary tells the very real story of a nation bound together by strong national pride and a desire to unite in the struggle for freedom.

Hitlers Canary was long listed for The Carnegie Medal. The book has also won the Read it or Else award in the Coventry Inspiration Book Awards 2007.

Praise for Hitlers Canary

There are not many classic children's novels about the Second World War but this is one of them. Toksvig's enchanting and inspiring tale reminds us of how even the smallest people made a difference.

Sandis new childrens book, Girls Are Best, is an interesting, funny book jam-packed with facts, tales and information on a range of topics that prove girls can do anything boys can do - and do it better! In this book, Sandi shows that His-tory is actually Her-story. Though they're often ignored or overlooked, they have changed the world. There's no question about it . . . Girls are best!
