Synopsis

Why do we sleep? Do animals dream? Where is the oldest bed in the world? In this compendium of 5-minute true stories, you will travel to Ancient Egypt to explore the five beds of Tutankhamun, jet off into space to see how astronauts get ready for bed, and plunge underwater to learn how hibernating turtles breathe through their bottoms. With up-to-the-minute, expert information and stunning illustrations, this book is the ultimate brainy bedtime companion for young children.

A fantastic non-fiction book to add to your collection. A collection of 30 short stories that are really interesting for both adult and child alike. Each story is short, making them perfect to engage your child and hold their attention, building their knowledge and learning new information. It also makes it accessible for reading at bedtime when children retain a lot of information.

My children aged 7 and 5 have really enjoyed reading each story and finding new facts, often running to Daddy to inform him of the new fact they have learned. From 'Why do we sleep?' to 'A trip to the stars', there is a story and information-filled page to engage everyone. A few of the particular stories we enjoyed were 'I see the moon', 'Remarkable hibernators' and 'King Tut's Beds'. The pages are crammed with interesting facts, information and insights into the workings of the world and solar system.

This book is perfect for a classroom environment as it covers an array of topics and pages could easily be used to further develop the knowledge of the pupils. The pages have diagrams, labelled images and clear images to enhance the information in the collection. Each topic links to the national curriculum and therefore support additional extra reading at home for children studying a topic in school; for example, Ancient Egypt, animal hibernation or Space exploration.

With engaging images accompanying each fact filled page, every child will be able to follow and understand the topic. The vocabulary is sophisticated with subject specific vocabulary, but not overly complicated to make it inaccessible for readers. As an adult I also really enjoyed learning some new information whilst sharing this with my children.

This book is an all-round engaging text for a variety of ages. Perfect for primary-aged children, but also many of my 11 - 14 year old students have enjoyed reading this book during class reading sessions.

A huge recommendation for your bookshelf.
