There are new revelations aplenty in All the Cursed Creatures, the third book in this fast-paced supernatural detective series.
Sage and Oren have fallen out after Sage discovers that everyone knew about her hybrid status, but her. Casting Oren as chief villain and eager to escape the toxic atmosphere at home she eagerly accepts a summons to Al-Khazneh, the Stone City and a mission from the Elders. Forced again to prove her worth as an Arcanas, she takes on a case of vampire slayings - infiltrating ancient gang rivalries and making new enemies. Realising the gravity and danger of her situation, she soon wishes Oren and P were on hand to help her navigate this strange world, albeit with their vastly differing methods.
The third book in this blistering series is another superior romantasy thriller. The characters and their behaviours are familiar now: we know Sage will be reckless, and we know that Oren and P will be hot on her tail, trying to unravel her latest 'situation'. This means that there is room for the introduction of new characters and the expansion of others we have encountered before.
There are some pauses in the action and storytelling that help unravel Oren's backstory and subsequent motivations, but it still reads in the same compulsive, page-turning way as its predecessors. The unsettling, starkly regimented setting of Al-Khazneh is itself like a new character lending extra menace to the plot, and there’s a breathtaking twist at the end.
Great plotting, blood-thirsty crime, romance and plenty of sardonic humour - this series continues to thrill at so many levels. Pure otherworldly escapism!
