Synopsis
Where Camille lives, the sunflowers grow so high they look like real suns. One day a strange man arrives in Camille's town. He has a straw hat and a yellow beard and his name is Vincent van Gogh. Featuring stunning reproductions of the great artist's work and based on a true-life incident as seen through the eyes of a small boy, this is the perfect introduction to Vincent van Gogh for children.

Anholt has written a whole series of books that focus on different artists - through the children that knew them. This is a great way of engaging children and getting them to think beyond the classic pieces of art that they often encounter in schools or museums in a passive way. This particular story follows 'Camille', a boy who makes friend with Vincent Van Gogh when he moves to his village. A friendship blossoms as he accompanies Van Gogh as he paints until the other villagers demand that Van Gogh leaves their village. This is based on a true story and Camille is one of the subjects that Van Gogh painted - an exciting concept for children to engage with. This story is less biographical than some of the other Anholt stories I've read, and feels much more fictional - the last page has a short biography about Van Gogh that gives more specific details about his life. Because of its simple nature, I think this book is suitable for slightly younger readers - they may not engage with who Van Gogh is, but the story is a great way to encourage them to look at and enjoy his artwork. Anholt cleverly combines bright illustrations with Van Gogh's original works. Picture book / Ages 5+ / Reviewed by Lizi Coombs, teacher
