Synopsis

An art-inspired gift that makes learning to name and explore wildlife a family adventure. Larger-than-life black and white drawings are paired with poetic texts that reveal the ways in which endangered creatures - including lions, elephants, giraffes, tigers, gorillas, penguins, Ethiopian wolves, macaws, turtles and zebras - live on Earth. Artworks by wildlife artist Stephen Walton are rendered in charcoal and give little ones the chance to get up close and personal with nature's wildest creatures. Virginia McKenna - actress and wildlife campaigner - has written a foreword which urges us to look at the beauty of these animals and do all we can to save them. A 5% royalty will be donated to her Born Free foundation.

Counting lions is a beautiful book. It is full of detailed drawings of different wild animals in their natural groups. At the beginning, there is a thoughtful message about endangered species and how we are putting them at such risk. It also draws on different habitats and the groups that animals live and survive in. This really got my children thinking about the similarities between animal families and human families; how we are all living, breathing and hunting for food to survive. The beautiful drawings add meaning to the real message of the book. Year 3 and 4 children reviewed the book, here are some of their thoughts: This is very interesting and has beautiful, enjoyable drawings. It has good facts at the back and loads of description. Counting Lions is brilliant. It is about the lives of all the amazing, endangered wildlife. It tells you not to harm the animals and is all about them. It is a very sad, interesting book. It has lions, elephants, giraffes, gorillas, wolves, turtles, macaws, zebras and penguins in it. Year 4: Counting Lions is a fantastic book for 7 to 10 year olds. The protection of the environment is important. One lion needs to be protected like us. Two gorillas, there's not many left so take care! Three giraffes are very nice and precious. Four tigers - wild hunters like us don't kill them. Five elephants are all in a row, needing help everywhere. Six Ethiopian wolves are safe and sound. Seven penguins are all huddled up! Eight turtles know the sand and sea. Nine macaws fly high but still die. Ten zebras are drinking water but need to be careful! Year 3: This book is good because it is telling people to stop killing animals and help them instead. It is about different kinds of animals and their lives. Some animals are endangered! In the book there are 10 different animals, such as lions, giraffes, gorillas and wolves. My favourite animal in the book was the tiger cubs and their mum because they were cute and smooth. I would recommend this book to anyone who cares about animals. My rating would be 5/5. Year 4: Counting Lions is a really good book for animal lovers and people that love wild animals. This lovely illustrated book tells you about 10 different animals and their habitats, condition and many more factual things. Yet when you read it, it feels like you are reading a story book. From lions to zebras, this book will tell you all about them. I would recommend the book to animal lovers of all ages and for parents to read to babies and people of old age.
