One day a gigantic egg appeared in our backyard.... Straight away questions begin to form in your head as you read Dino: A Pet Unlike Any Other. I could instantly see this text being used in a school setting as an example of 'Book Talk' - using the text only to allow children to explore and infer meanings. I would love to hear the suggestions a class of 5 year olds would come up for why a gigantic egg has appeared or even what could be inside. As you can gues from the title, the egg turns out to be a dinosaur egg. The story reveals how, despite being a dino, the creature can become a well loved member of the family. The illustrations really support the text within the story and add to the story greatly. This is a book of few words but they work perfectly for children of 3 plus and would be great to lure them into reading as it doesn't take long to read. The children would also enjoy relating the experiences of Dino to their own pets, particularly those with dogs. There are also opportunities to explore feelings within the book, especially when they are at the park. The way the book flows over the course of the day lends it to being used when planning to write diary entries or would be easy to turn into a sequencing activity. The book has a great tease ending with the introduction of three new eggs and the need for a bigger house... Children would love discussing the names of the new pets as well as what they could get up to during day, setting up a story innovation perfectly. Another hit for dinosaur lovers.
