Lets talk about the newest board book release from Katie Dale, Eggs! There are so many teaching and learning elements to this children's book whilst being such a joy to read and experience. If award-winning artist Jenny Lovlie's cute chick illustrations on the cover haven't already stolen your heart, then Katie Dale's words will! Katie Dale is incredibly successful with over 100 children's books published all over the world. It is clear to see that she knows exactly how to keep children engaged as an active listener.

The following rhythmic and rhyming verse is used on each page for our children to quickly grasp and join in with: "In the ... lies a nest. What's inside it? Have you guessed? ... egg cracks and rocks about…" The questions in this verse encourage our little ones to guess what might be inside the egg. They may even draw on their knowledge of baby animals which come from eggs and use the various locations in the book (desert, river, jungle, ocean and farmyard) as clues.

Each egg requires two flaps to be lifted to open it. This is one of my favourite features of the book as it has been a great challenge for my toddler to learn to open two flaps at the same time! With tightly sealed eggs and finger cut-outs to support on opening them, fine motor skills are most definitely put to the test.

If all of that learning isn't enough… your child is also learning to repeatedly count from zero until they reach 5. Being able to count is one important skill, but being able to count and point to the corresponding objects is a skill which requires a good understanding of 1:1 correspondence.

There is so much to learn and discover… a rest might just be needed afterwards! That is even catered for too with an accompanying audio book full of sound effects which is accessed by scanning a QR code. This book should have pride of place at home and in every nursery, pre-school and Reception classroom.
