Reviews
Nikki
Frankie loves fairy tales and on one sunny day at the beach ends up finding herself lucky enough to go on an adventure with some of her favourite fairy-tale characters. She meets a little mermaid who is very afraid of a sea monster much bigger than she is, Frankie is courageous and decides that they must be big and brave together. Frankie and the little mermaid go on to find other characters who are also afraid of the 'gigantic' sea monster. Frankie encourages all of her new-found friends to be big and brave and face up to this 'huge' sea monster together and along their way have lots of fun. This book has a good message about overcoming your fears and that some things may not be as bad as you first thought, a nice story to share during PSHE or maybe at the start of the year with young children who are a bit nervous about the unknown of a new year ahead. Frankie is a young girl who is a relatable hero for the children, she is witty and sensible and takes charge of the characters matter of factly to get them all to calm down and support each other. There are lots of synonyms used for the word 'big' in this story and they are highlighted in bold throughout. A good book to use with children to introduce them to new words and the effects of using wow words in their own writing or first use of thesauruses. Links could also be made in maths looking at longer/shorter/bigger/smaller comparing measurements. Picture book / Ages 3+ / Reviewed by Nikki Stiles, teacher.
