Synopsis

A bold, bright and fascinating Nature Storybook about one of the world's most hated creatures - the snake!

A bold, bright and fascinating Nature Storybook, by award-winning writer and zoologist Nicola Davies, about one of the world's most hated creatures - the snake! Perhaps it's the way they slither, or maybe it's their slimy, scaly skin ... whatever the reason, many of us shiver at the thought of a snake - and so does the little girl in this book. But the rest of her family loves them and as they tell her more about snakes (did you know they have no eyelids, smell with their tongues and can swim?) she has a change of heart, and by the end of the book she loves them too. Luciano Lozano's stylish, colourful and informative illustrations perfectly match the warmth and humour of the text.

Reviews

Fiona

As the reader opens I (Don't) Like Snakes he/she is confronted with end papers filled snakes of different designs and colours, wriggling and curling across the page. For the young reader there is no need to feel concerned, as these are illustrated snakes and not disturbing at all. This is an interesting fact/fiction book that is based on a question and answer concept. It is told from the perspective of a young girl whose family keeps snakes as pets but the problem is that she really, really doesn't like them. The family does not seem to understand her dislike and question her reasons. The discussion, which follows, takes the reader on a fact-finding journey about snakes. Her first reason for disliking them is because they slither. The matching page gives information about how snakes slither in different ways. From then on the following pages give information about how snakes move: side-wind, fly, climb and swim. The book gives information about snakes' skins, their scales, and their tongues that flick, lack eyelids, poison and laying eggs. At the end of the book, through learning about snakes, the young narrator changes her mind and decides she really, really likes them. The Luciano Lozano illustrations represent snakes very clearly. This is an ideal book to have in the reading corner and to share with groups of children.
