QED essentials is a series of books designed to help children develop skills in reading, thinking, writing, talking and listening. Farm animals is a non-fiction book that covers the animals that live on a farm. Each page has one, simple sentence on it and a clear photograph that relates to the sentence. At the end of the book, there are some activities that you can do with your child; the first page has activities to develop reading skills, the next questions that will develop comprehension skills as they all relate to things they have read about in the book; and then some more active to do that also relate to the book - find a yellow animal that lives on the farm for example. The book is simple and is a good one for early readers; It's particularly good for parents who may need extra support helping their children to develop early reading skills, as it has a 'help' page at the very back. My only criticism is that not all of the words are phonically regular to phase 3 sounds and this may cause some early readers to come unstuck. 24 pages / Ages 4+ / Reviewed by Lizi Backhouse, teacher
