Letters to a Monster is a heartwarmingly funny book about the friendship between a little girl and a monster. Sophie just knows there’s a monster hiding under her bed and she decides to write them a letter to give them a final warning to leave! This begins a back and forth correspondence between the monster and Sophie where we find out that the monster used to live under the bed but not anymore…. The monster tells his tale of why he had to find somewhere else to sleep and Sophie begins to feel sorry for him.
Letters to a Monster is a lovely book about unlikely friendship which has been beautifully illustrated. I especially liked the little details like the toilet roll pattern on monsters letters - gorgeous!
This would be a wonderful picture book to use alongside letter writing with children in KS1, to model letter writing and inspire them to write their own; can they imagine a monster that lives in their cupboard or the garden shed, perhaps, and write a letter asking it to leave - or to be friends?
