Marvin and the Book of Magic is both a funny and exciting story for children. It has likeable, inclusive characters and although the story is centred on magic, it is also a tale about resilience, friendship and entertainment.

Jenny Pearson has written this magical story with both humour and a base line of the value of unconditional friendship. The story is set in both the school and home environments so will resonate with its target audience. It has a clear beginning, middle, and end so will encourage readers to develop reading stamina as they continue through the story to see what will happen at the school talent show.

As is usual for dyslexia friendly books published by the experts in this field, Barrington Stoke, there are regular paragraph breaks and a good use of space so the story remains appealing without being overwhelming. The illustrations by Aleksei Bitskoff add to the storytelling and are both humorous and dynamic.

Highly recommended for primary school children and a great super-readable addition to secondary school to encourage reluctant and struggling readers as a paired reading book.
