Synopsis

So Devin Wore a Skirt is an empowering picture book for young children about the importance of family acceptance and the joy of being true to yourself.

Devin's family are all dressed up for Nanabapa's Big Birthday, and everyone looks fabulous! But Devin doesn't have anything special to wear. Then, he spots one of his sister's skirts lying on her bed - it's the deepest blue, and it shimmers in the light. So, Devin puts the skirt on. . . and it feels amazing! But what will everyone say?

Devin hides the skirt under a disguise to finally enjoy the party and dance the night away. But all this dancing makes Devin VERY hot! So, he takes off his disguise and reveals the skirt. All eyes are on him -but in steps Nanabapa. He takes Devin's hand, twirls him round in his beautiful skirt . . . and the party continues in full swing!

In So Devin Wore a Skirt, debut author Shireen Lalji and New York Times bestselling artist Lucy Fleming have created a glowing story about being true to yourself - encouraging readers, young and old, to express their identity in the way that feels right.

Reviews

Tina

This joyous book is described as "a big- hearted story about being your best, most sparkling self" and delivers just as promised.

Set against the background of preparing for an important family party we meet Devin, a young boy who wants to wear an outfit that expresses who he is. He tries many options but nothing feels quite right. His sister's sparkly tutu skirt fits the bill perfectly but she warns him that other members of his family will not understand his choice. Devin agrees and covers up the beautiful skirt with more conventional clothes. However, as the party gets going, Devin's inner sparkles break out!

So Devin Wore a Skirt is easy to understand and would work well in an Early Years setting, whilst older KS1 pupils could find much to discuss amongst this struggle between conventionality and individualism. The fantastic illustrations by Lucy Fleming add to the pleasure.

This book will be shared over and over again and would be a perfect addition to a home bookshelf or a classroom setting. All children will recognise their family members amongst those assembled here, many will have tales to share about favourite outfits and the happiness they can bring. A heart-warming read for all!
