The Super Questers are back! I absolutely love these books and the children in my infants school firmly agree. In true scientific fashion, though, this is the Super Questers evolution! Whereas the previous series were large format, brightly coloured picture books with masses of stickers and puzzles to complete, this new series is aimed at older children. The books are a smaller, chapter-based format and although there are plenty of illustrations they are all monochrome, making the book look very grown-up and sophisticated for fluent readers.
In SuperQuesters Mission: River Crest Rescue, Leo, Lilli and Bee are friends with a keen interest in STEM. While helping out at a community gardening project, they discover an old game in a forgotten shed. In true Jumanji style, the game pulls them in and they find themselves in Questland, with plenty of problems that need solving in a logical and evidence-based manner. When the thrilling adventure comes to an end there is a glossary full of scientific terms used in the story to build vocabulary and 4 pages of related science experiments for children to try out at home.
The fact that River Crest Rescue - the first title in this spin-off series - features plants and our environment makes it perfect to support a summer term science-themed project of growing. Regularly featured on each page are bite-size facts about plants and animals featured in the story, which provide that 'irresistible learning' we all strive to provide for our pupils. If you have a budding scientist at home, these books will keep them happy for a few hours and can provide further activities and puzzles for them to complete later.
I can see these books being ones children will return to again and again, to check they haven't forgotten the facts or for a refresher before starting a new science topic at school, just so they can impress everyone with their prior knowledge! Highly recommended.
