This is a story about family, difference and acceptance. Dex the dog does not particularly like to dig, bark or fight, like the rest of the family. He much prefers chatting, painting and playing. When engaged in these activities, his pleasure is evidenced by wagging his tail. Not surprising for a dog perhaps, but Dex's family are embarrassed by his behaviour and order him to control his tail. This can only be achieved by huge efforts and at the expense of Dex's happiness.

On a family trip to the park, Dex sits on his tail so that it does not wag. However, he cannot restrain himself when a new dog, Bailey, appears on the scene and invites him to play. Bailey has a wonderfully expressive tail, which is large, fluffy and untamed. Soon, Dex and Bailey are playing together joyfully, both tails wagging, to the disapproval of Dex's Dad, which leads to Dex running away.

After that, Dex is subdued and his concerned Dad suggests they have a walk to the park together. Their chat is interrupted by the energetic arrival of Bailey. In no time, all three of them are engaged in an afternoon of games and merriment, causing even Dad's tail to wag!

The illustrations bring these colourful characters to life, especially in the depiction of Bailey and his amazing tail. The pages are full of movement and, in the earlier pictures, contrast the stillness of a very restrained Dex with the fluidity of Bailey. A highlight for me was the double page portrayal of the three dogs tumbling and rolling down the hill.

In this story, readers may identify with the feeling of being different from other family members in character or interests, which could lead to further discussion and exploration.
