The Haunting of Tyrese Walker, set in Jamaica, follows a boy in the depths of grief and who is taken to visit his 'Grammy' in Jamaica. What his mother hopes will help him with his grief only seems to make Tyreese more closed off.
From the moment they arrived at Grammy's, strange things start to happen, beginning when Tyrese starts to see and hear things. Tyrese is not very receptive when he arrives at Grammy's house and is a bit rude to Grammy and his cousin. Later that first night, Tyrese goes outside to talk to Grammy who is spreading rice on the ground outside her home. Grammy explains it is to keep the evil spirits away but Tyrese thinks his Grammy's superstitions are just that . So, when she asks him to finish circling the house with the rice, he gets scared and brushes it off, leaving the house exposed because he didn't finish the job. That night more strange things begin to happen....
What will happen to Tyrese and his family? The Haunting of Tyrese Walker is a great story that will be sure to scare a teen or two out there. Well written, touching on subjects that people may find difficult such as grief, as well as managing to incorporate mystery and a dash of horror

The chilling young adult novel by J P Rose follows the story of a young boy from Manchester, entrapped by emotions following his father's death, the young boy travels to Jamaica to see his grandmother and family. After the reminder of his father's life in the family home rapidly affects Tyrese, he begins to spiral. Trapped by fear, anxiety and sadness, Tyrese ventures into the thick forest surrounding his grandmother's home. From his first night, peculiar events begin to happen. Whilst struggling with grief in the hot, humid, forest surroundings, Tyrese's journey only just begins.
This young adult novel incorporates the themes of grief, family, friendships and the importance of discovery and acceptance. This novel is great for those who enjoy mystery and aspects of horror, written in a way that is exceptionally crafted to show these topics for the understanding of young adult readers.
