Synopsis

When Tia and Nat spot a turtle in difficulty off the coast of Devil Bird Island, they must help it find its way home in this inspiring tale of conservation from Gill Lewis.

A camping trip to count puffins on Devil Bird Island turns into a real adventure for friends Tia and Nat. First, they have to rescue a mysterious marine animal caught in a fishing net and swept very far from home. Then, when it gets dark, they hear strange wailing and something white and ghostly flies at their tent.

Safely back home, they unravel the mysteries of the previous night and learn some important lessons about how everyone on the planet needs to look out for the wildlife around them.

Particularly suitable for readers aged 7+ with a reading age of 7.

Devil Bird Island is the amazing third book in Gill Lewis's Island Vet series. When her Mum's wallet is stolen and she loses her new puffin toy, Tia is disenchanted with the big city after visiting her Granny for her birthday. They return to Haven island briefly before adventuring on to Devil Bird Island. Tia likes nothing more than helping to count the birds and track them. The true adventure starts when Tia spots a strange floating rock in the water.

This is a wonderfully written, dyslexia-friendly text, focused on the import topics of conservation and kindness. This would be a wonderful book to inspire children to care for the world around them whilst reading for pleasure. It would also be a pleasure to use this book in a group reading session. I would use it when focusing on use of language and persuasive writing. You could also use it for character studies.

This is one of my favourite series for early chapter book readers. I hope that there are more to come.
