When he wakes in the springtime, the weather is beautiful, but Bear just doesn't feel right. A storm cloud is hanging over his head, making him feel that he can't do anything. No matter what he tries, Bear can't get rid of his cloud. However, when his friend, Squirrel comes over, Bear finds the courage to talk about his feelings and starts to feel better.
Perfect for encouraging discussions about feelings, The Storm Cloud is a lovely story. Bear isn't sure why he is feeling sad or why his feelings have become so intense, validating the fact that many of us have the occasional day where we feel like this. His friends try to help in different ways, but it is only when Squirrel takes the time to sit and listen that Bear begins to feel better. Ending on a hopeful and happy note, the friends all gather together to enjoy the beautiful rainbow which appears, symbolising the feelings of joy and optimism which often follow those of despair.
The Storm Cloud shows the importance of talking about feelings and Squirrel allows Bear time to discuss his emotions and reflect on his mood without blowing things up out of proportion, showing children that these feelings are perfectly normal and are experienced by everyone - all part of the ups and downs of life.
The illustrations are charming and allow children to explore Bear's feelings visually as well as through the text. A great one for home and school!
