Learning to Fly is the first title in the series Unicornia with three further titles announced for publication next year. Already a successful series in Spain, with nine books published there so far and even a board game, it's good to see it appearing here.

This installment focuses on Claudia's arrival in the magical hidden city of Unicornia; starting at The Academy of Magic, making friends, and getting accustomed to the unusual lessons. Unlike other similar series like Bronte Tempestra and Mermaid Academy, there is no tension or quest. She isn't bullied or finds problems she needs to solve. There is no danger or action. It is a very gentle easy-going story where her only difficulty is being unsure how to approach the unicorn she has been allocated for flying class, never mind fly one. By recognising the importance of not giving up, with help from her new friends, she overcomes her fears of failure.

Unicornia is described as being the place where dreams come true and this world matches the style of story - sweet, pleasant, soothing - with its cars running on candyfloss and syrup and the air smelling of sweets. The appearance of this heavily illustrated book also supports this quality with its predominantly pink cute cartoonish pictures.

This is a chapter book very stereotypically designed for young girls; if you want depth, action, or adventure go elsewhere but if you want a relaxing, tender, enjoyable read, this is for you.
