Synopsis

Henrique has had HIV for three years. Ian has just tested positive. Victor got with Henrique last night and thinks he might have it. Ian, Victor and Henrique must navigate treatment, friendship and love, and eventually learn to trust each other. Because with judgement and ignorance lurking round every corner, the real challenge isn't the disease - it's other people.

Brazilian author Lucas Rocha unveils the common misconceptions and prejudices that still surround HIV in the twenty-first century, showing how far we've come while shining a light on just how far we have yet to go.

In a clinic in Brazil, Ian has just tested positive for HIV. There he meets Victor who thinks he might have HIV after getting together with Henrique (not knowing his positive status) but he tests negative. In an attempt to console Ian, Victor suggests he meets up with Henrique, who has lived with HIV for three years. Their lives all change in an instant, intersect by chance, and then unfold through constantly alternating chapters, each distinctly narrated by one of the three main characters, giving the reader a unique insight into their developing thoughts, feelings, fears and anxieties. Together they navigate their way through diagnosis, treatment and relationships with family, found family, friends and with each other.

On one level, this eye-opening book breaks the stigma surrounding HIV through education and medically sound information, clearly outlining the physical impact of HIV, the medical treatments available, the side effects and the importance of self-care. It also charts the changing attitudes to HIV since the eighties, proving beyond shadow of a doubt that HIV is no longer life-limiting, a cause for alienation, nor a death sentence. But while the scientific and historical perspectives are undoubtedly important and skilfully-handled, what elevates the story are characters to really care about - and powerful, flawed male characters at that - whose voices need to be heard.

Each at very different stages in their HIV journeys, the intense insight we have into the thoughts and feelings of each character as they come to terms with their situation highlights just how hard it is to continually confront the ignorance and judgement of other people, whether family, friends, lovers or strangers. Our relationship with the characters changes as they do, we become invested in their futures and care very much about their right to privacy and what happens to them when the novel is over.

This largely conversation-led, big-hearted narrative will absolutely appeal to teens for its honesty and openness. It cleverly forces the reader to question their own opinions and possible prejudices. Though the issues at the heart of the book are undoubtedly serious, they never overwhelm the narrative; there's no room for doom and gloom in this occasionally funny, often emotional, always very hopeful story. Rocha acknowledges that we make mistakes but that there is always a way out and a positive future.

Where We Go From Here is astonishing - the most brave, honest, unflinchingly-real and impactful story I've read in a long time. It should be in every KS4 school library collection to smash stereotypes, overcome prejudice and build real empathy. Shout about it to your school LGBTQ+ groups and PSHE Co-ordinators too. Full Disclosure by Camryn Garrett is an equally honest, life-affirming story with HIV positive representation and a strong female protagonist.
