We are delighted to announce that Hob Green Primary School in Stourbridge has won this year's Achievement Award for the ReadingZone Picture Book Competition 2017. Buckingham Park Primary School in Shoreham by Sea is the runner-up.
Both schools adopted the competition as part of their World Book Day activities and spent time sharing picture books with children and talking about what makes a great picture book text. The children went on to create a wide range of picture books, many beautifully illustrated, some using digital media, and our judges were enthralled by their stories and impressed by the standards of text and illustration in their entries.
The judges chose one picture book, the Dark Side of the Robot By Bethany and Fatima (ages 10 and 11), to represent the wonderful entries from Hob Green Primary School. The school will receive 50 printed copies of their book (produced by Hachette Children's Books) and a selection of ten picture books for their school library.
Judge Neal Layton said of The Dark Side of the Robot, "Magic trees, evil robots and themes of starting a new school are woven into this exciting tale. The detailed comic book style illustrations push the narrative along vigorously, and I also really liked the cliff hanger ending which leaves plenty of room for sequel!" Congratulations to ALL the children at Hob Green Primary School, and thank you to all the teachers and staff who supported them in creating their entries.
