The winners of the Create a Comic Competition, run by ReadingZone and The Phoenix Comic, have been announced!
We challenged children and young people aged 4 to 16 years to create a comic strip, judged by the editorial team at The Phoenix Comic. We now have a winner for the Primary and Secondary categories, plus a runner-up in each category. We are delighted to share the winning picture books, below, and the full shortlist. Congratulations to each of our winners, to the runners-up, and to all those shortlisted.
The Winners of the Create a Comic Competition (ReadingZone & The Phoenix Comic)
Primary Category
Primary Winner: The Boy Who Became a Superhero by Samuel (age 6), Locking Primary School

The judges said: We love the energy and action in this story. Samuel's drawings are full of expression and wonderful details, and there's also a lot of humour in his comic strip. His story is clear to follow and we like how he's framed the start and end with the boy and the superhero. A fantastic effort, well done Samuel!
Primary Runner-Up: Birthday Pig by Alexandra (age 8), British Junior Academy of Brussels

The judges said: This is a really strong entry by Alexandra, who has a really good instinct for creating a comic strip. Her story has surprise and humour, and is clear to follow, and her drawings are of a really high standard with great expression. Well done, Alexandra!
Secondary Category
Secondary Winner: I Love Running by Sarah (age 14), Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School

The Judges said: Sarah has an instinctive feel for comic illustration and her characters' expressions are full of feeling. She has been able to create a strong storyline using just a few lines of text - and has managed to get a really lovely touch of humour into her final panel. Well done Sarah, this is a great comic strip!
Secondary Runner-Up: The Return of Vector by Emil & Bruno (ages 11), Cherwell School

The judges said: We really enjoyed this comic strip, which has great characters, lots of action and a strong storyline. The frames are used well, with close-ups and wider perspectives helping to break up the page. The superhero, Vector, is great and we love the colourful villains, too. A great team effort, Emil and Bruno!
Prizes: The Primary and Secondary winners' schools will win a year's subscription to The Phoenix comic PLUS, for the comic creator(s), one set of the seven Bunny Vs Monkey books. Runner-Up prizes are a six month's subscription to The Phoenix comic and a Bunny Vs Monkey book.
