Help judge the Young People's Book Prize 2025 science award

This September, schools and youth groups will be able to apply to help judge science book award, the Young People's Book Prize. Selected schools will join judging panels from across the UK to help pick the winner.

Hundreds of judging panels receive a free set of shortlisted books - so this is a great opportunity to receive six brilliant books aimed at enthusing and exciting children about science.

How to get involved

A shortlist of six science books written in the previous year will be selected by a group of adult judges. Once these have been picked, young people aged up to 14 across the UK will receive the shortlists and vote to choose the winning book.

Judging panels can be in schools, libraries, science centres or youth groups: participation is open to any groups who are able to meet and discuss the shortlist and vote for what they think is the best book.

Each judging panel will need to have a Chair, hold judging meetings, discuss the merits of each book and submit their vote and comments. All participating groups have an equal say in deciding the winner.

Each group will receive a judging pack with all the information they need to take part. The results from all the groups are then collated by The Royal Society to find out who is the winner.

Each judging panel will need to be overseen by a responsible adult, who will ensure the judges provide their decision, and supporting comments and information, to the Society.

Alongside the judging, there is a video competition which gives panels an opportunity to share their experiences in a creative way and a chance to win prizes.
