Find out about the five picture books shortlisted for this year's Klaus Flugge Prize 2021 from one of the judges, Mathew Tobin.

The Klaus Flugge Award highlights the most promising and exciting newcomers to picture book illustration.

Mathew, English and Children's Literature in Primary ITE at Oxford Brookes University, tells us why these five books stood out for the judges - and why we're likely to be seeing more from these young illustrators.

The five shortlisted picture books are:

Child of Galaxies illustrated by Charlotte Ager, written by Blake Nuto (Flying Eye Books)

While You're Sleeping illustrated by John Broadley, written by Mick Jackson (Pavilion)

Gustavo the Shy Ghost by Flavia Z Drago (Walker Books)

I'm Sticking with You illustrated by Steve Small, written by Smriti Halls (Simon and Schuster)

My Red Hat illustrated by Rachel Stubbs (Walker Books)

The overall winner will be announced in September.

Mathew Tobin teaches English and Children's Literature in Primary ITE at Oxford Brookes University. He also leads and teaches several modules at Masters level on Children's Literature and its History as well as Reading for Pleasure.
