My Dragon by Andy Shepherd

In the latest stop on Andy Shepherd's blog tour, the author of The Boy Who Grew Dragons series joins ReadingZone to talk about growing dragons....

Look out for The Boy Who Sang with Dragons, book 5 in the series, out now!

Andy Shepherd writes, 'I've loved dragons ever since I could sing Puff the Magic Dragon and saw Pete's Dragon on TV. And I wanted a piece of that magic.

So when my sons were little, it wasn't surprising that I told them a story about a dragon who lived on our shed roof. When they asked me where he'd come from and I had the idea that he'd grown in the allotment we passed by on our walks, I basically turned seven years old again. Because the thought of growing dragons was exciting and total wish fulfillment on my part.

The dragon I've grown is called Glint. He's turquoise and purple with amber eyes and sparkling scales. He curls up on my shoulder like Flicker and breathes sparks that light up my imagination, which let's face it is very handy sometimes. Like Flicker he's not too much trouble to live with, although I do check my slippers before slipping them on. And I keep my oven glove and water pistol by my desk.

I love that readers send me pictures and descriptions of the dragons they'd grow if they had a dragon-fruit tree in their garden.

I wonder what kind of dragon you'd grow?

Here's a picture of Glint drawn by my sons.

I also have a wooden Glint made by my dad, and a metal sculpture of him by Peter Barker, which my husband commissioned when the first book came out.

Glint is rather pleased with all of them and lauds it over the other 40+ dragons in our house who haven't been immortalized in art.'
