A new literacy initiative is coming to the UK from Finland, called Read Hour, and will launch on UN International Literacy Day this September - with the support of Moomin characters; Swedish-Finn illustrator and writer Tove Jansson originally published her Moomin books in Finland.
Read Hour is encouraging everyone to set aside one hour on Wednesday 8th September to sit down and read, whether that be a book, magazine or comic book. The initiative began in Finland two years ago, and since then thousands of Finns have taken part.
The official Read Hour will be held from 2pm – 3pm, but if that is not possible, it can be done at any time during the day.
You can let people know what you're up to using the hashtag #ReadHourUK on social media, or by posting a photo of yourselves or your group taking part to encourage others to join in.
Happy reading!
