Synopsis

Genetically-modified teens try to bring down the organisation that made them, in this second action-packed installment in the 21% Monster series.

'The girl put her hands on her hips, cocked her head and answered: "My name is Aurora Maria Ash-Valero and I'm here to kick your butt!"'

Since Darren Devlin and Marek Masters joined forces, there has only been one thing on their minds - taking down XSP, the secret organisation that transformed them into genetically-modified superhumans. Even with 21% monster Darren's incredible strength, and 19% alien Marek's super intelligence, XSP is more than a match for them.

But what if there was another survivor of XSP's experiments? A tall, tough, athletic teen girl able to withstand sub-zero temperatures and track potential predators? A girl who's 17% sabre-tooth polar bear, and out for revenge.  Two's company, but Three IS UNSTOPPABLE in this high-octane adventure, 21% Monster: Ice Giant.

Reviews

Nathan

21% Monster, Ice Giant by P J Canning is another 5-star, high-action adventure story following the journey of Darren and Marek. After reading the first 21% Monster, I was very excited to open the second adventure from this talented author!

The constant twists and turns throughout the story are so clever and make for a truly original sci-fi action adventure read. The story continues following the adventures of Darren and Marek, who are intent on bringing down XSP, the secret organisation that made Darren and Marek genetically modified superhumans, and which now seeks to destroy them.

In this adventure, we meet a new and unique character called Aurora, who is 17% sabre-tooth polar bear and so able to withstand sub-zero temperatures. Aurora adds a new, exciting dynamic to the series. Together, the characters continue their journey to discover more about Helix 51.

The story bursts with action and clever twists but it is also the undertone of witty humour and funny interactions between Darren and Marek that hold the reader's interest. I also loved the strong family bond between Daisy and Darren; it is really interesting to observe the pull of this strong family bond.

I would highly recommend this read for children in Year 5 and 6 (ages 9+) upwards. It's a great middle reader, but I honestly think many adults would enjoy this series, too. I know many of the children in our school loved the first book, 21% Monster, and are eager and hungry to get their hands on the next chapter for Darren and Marek. Please keep writing!
