Synopsis
Eric Doomsday loves doing magic tricks. But even though his best friend, Vinnie Mumbles, thinks they're great, they do always seem to go a bit... wrong. When some very important School Inspectors threaten to close down Eric's school, his headmistress decides to put on a talent show. A talent show with Eric in it. And Eric's magic tricks. Thank goodness the Earth isn't being inspected by aliens at the same time! Because magic, aliens and talent shows are sure to be a horrible mix... Aren't they?

This book is laugh out loud funny, my 11-year-old agrees and is currently speed reading it as I type. I would struggle to find anyone who would not enjoy this book. Full of powerful descriptions and similes - 'two red eyes that burned like embers from the fires of hell' - it would be a great tool to use in the classroom during modelled writing or as a recommended read. For those who enjoy an overcoming-the-monster story mixed with a sprinkling of magic, in a setting called Dreary Inkling undergoing an alien invasion during a talent show - this book is for you! Written by author Matt Brown and speckled with cartoon styled illustrations that bring the story alive, by Paco Sordo. Eric Doomsday enjoys performing magic tricks. His best friend Vinnie thinks they are great, even if they always end up going wrong. When some rather unusual school inspectors threaten to close Eric's school down, his head teacher decides a talent show is what is needed. A talent show with Eric performing his magic tricks. Little does Eric know that it might just be his magic tricks that save the day - or rather, 'uuurrth'. I would recommend this book for readers aged 7+ but adults will also enjoy the humour running throughout. Aliens Invaded my Talent Show is the first in a series by Matt Brown and I for one am looking forward to reading the next two books: Mutant Zombies cursed my School Trip and Killer Vending Machines Wrecked my Lunch. 250 pages / Ages 7+ / Reviewed by Kelly Buxton, teacher
