Reviews

Elizabeth

After what felt like a slow start, I really enjoyed this book. It covers a very short period, just 6 days, then another a week later, but charts the growth in a boy/young man of 16 as he goes from being the named heir to his brother the Prince, to having to take over as Prince and ruler. Feeling wholly unfitted to take charge, and hindered as much as supported by his council of advisors, he finds a friend in the Physician's niece and apprentice, who sets out to find the truth behind the Prince's assassination. The characters are vivid and realistically complicated and the plotting and writing are both convincing. It is unusual to find a non-Arthurian fantasy set clearly within a Christian society, but the religious background adds rather than takes away from the atmosphere.
